01
Client Profile & Background
A large manufacturing company based in Bekasi, Indonesia, with multiple production lines and a centralized ERP system running on Dell PowerEdge servers. The company operates 24/7 and generates terabytes of transactional data daily. Their IT infrastructure includes a primary data center on-site and a need for a secondary site to comply with industry regulations and internal business continuity policies.
The company had previously relied on tape backups stored off-site, but the recovery process was manual and time-consuming, taking up to 48 hours for full restoration. With the expansion of their operations, they sought a more automated and reliable DR solution that could meet an RPO of less than 1 hour and an RTO of under 4 hours.

Technical Challenge
The primary challenge was the existing backup infrastructure's inability to meet the required RPO/RTO. The tape-based system had a 24-hour backup window and a 48-hour restore time, leading to potential data loss of up to 24 hours. Additionally, the network bandwidth between the primary site and the intended secondary site was limited to 100 Mbps, making real-time replication difficult.
Another critical issue was the lack of automated failover testing. The company had never conducted a full DR drill, and the IT team was unsure if the backup tapes were even restorable. A risk assessment revealed that a 12-hour production outage could cost the company IDR 5 billion in lost revenue and penalties.

Implemented Solution
Intilogy designed a comprehensive DR solution using Veeam Backup & Replication for continuous data protection and Synology RS3617RPxs as the secondary storage target. The primary site utilized VMware vSphere 7 with vSphere Replication for VM-level replication to a secondary site located 50 km away in Cikarang.
To overcome bandwidth limitations, we implemented WAN acceleration using Veeam's built-in compression and deduplication, reducing replication traffic by 70%. The secondary site was equipped with a server and storage cluster running HP ProLiant DL380 Gen10 servers and a Synology NAS for backup storage. Automated failover orchestration was configured via Veeam's Enterprise Manager, allowing one-click DR drills.

Results & ROI
Post-implementation, the company achieved an RPO of 15 minutes and an RTO of 2 hours for critical VMs. The automated DR testing reduced manual effort by 90%, and the first full-scale drill was completed successfully with zero data loss. The cost of the solution was recouped within 18 months by avoiding just one potential outage.
Additionally, the company now meets compliance requirements for data sovereignty and business continuity. The IT team gained confidence through regular automated testing, and the solution scaled to protect 50 VMs with room for growth. The total investment of IDR 1.2 billion was justified by the risk mitigation and operational efficiency gains.
