01
Client Profile & Background
A large-scale manufacturing company located in Bekasi, West Java, operates multiple production lines for automotive components. The company employs over 5,000 staff and manages critical data including ERP systems, CAD files, and supply chain databases. Their IT infrastructure comprises on-premises servers running Windows and Linux, with virtualized environments using VMware vSphere. The company had a legacy backup system using tape drives and basic disk-based backups, which were performed nightly with a 24-hour recovery point objective (RPO). As part of their digital transformation, they aimed to modernize their backup infrastructure to support 24/7 operations and comply with industry regulations.
02
Technical Challenge
The manufacturing company faced severe challenges with their existing backup system. Backup windows exceeded 12 hours nightly, causing performance degradation on production storage. More critically, they experienced a ransomware attack that encrypted 80% of their file servers, and their backup tapes were also infected because they were connected to the same network. Recovery took over 72 hours, resulting in production downtime costing IDR 5 billion per day. The IT team identified that their backup solution lacked immutability and air-gapping, making them vulnerable to advanced ransomware that targets backup repositories. Additionally, their RPO of 24 hours meant potential data loss of up to a day's work, unacceptable for real-time inventory management.

Implemented Solution
Intilogy designed and deployed a multi-layered backup ransomware recovery solution. The core components included Veeam Backup & Replication v12 for continuous data protection with instant VM recovery and ransomware detection. For immutable storage, we deployed Synology RS3621xs+ NAS appliances configured with WORM snapshots, ensuring backups cannot be modified or deleted. Additionally, we implemented an air-gapped backup copy to a remote site using QNAP TS-h1886XU-RP with a scheduled power-off during non-backup windows. For network segmentation, we integrated Fortinet FortiGate firewalls to isolate backup traffic and enforce least-privilege access. The solution also includes HCI nodes for staging recovery environments, reducing RTO to minutes.

Results & ROI
Post-implementation, the manufacturing company achieved a 99.9% backup success rate with backup windows reduced from 12 hours to 2 hours. RPO improved from 24 hours to 1 hour, and RTO for critical VMs dropped from 72 hours to 15 minutes. During a subsequent ransomware simulation, the immutable backups remained untouched, enabling full recovery within 2 hours without paying ransom. The company reported a 300% ROI within the first year by avoiding downtime costs and reducing IT operational overhead. Additionally, they achieved compliance with ISO 27001 and local data protection regulations. The solution's scalability allows them to add more workloads without major infrastructure changes.
