Technical Challenge
The existing three-tier infrastructure suffered from chronic performance bottlenecks: storage latency spiked to 50ms during peak production hours, causing MES slowdowns and 2% scrap rate increase. Backup windows exceeded 12 hours due to fragmented SAN and tape libraries, leaving a 24-hour recovery point objective (RPO) that risked losing an entire shift's data. Additionally, hardware refresh cycles required forklift upgrades with 8-week lead times, impeding the rollout of a new IIoT platform. The IT team spent 70% of its time on storage provisioning and patching, leaving little bandwidth for innovation.

Implemented Solution
The manufacturer deployed a four-node hyperconverged infrastructure cluster based on VMware vSAN, running on Lenovo ThinkAgile HX5520 appliances with Intel Xeon Gold processors and NVMe SSDs. Veeam Backup & Replication was integrated for snapshot-based backups with 15-minute RPO. The solution also included disaster recovery replication to a second site in Jakarta using VMware Site Recovery Manager. The entire migration from legacy SAN was completed over a weekend with zero downtime, using VMware vMotion.
