Client Profile & Background

A mid-sized manufacturing company in Bekasi, Indonesia, with over 500 employees and a growing portfolio of IoT sensors, ERP systems, and design workstations. The company operates 24/7 with critical data including CAD files, production logs, and financial records. Their existing IT infrastructure consisted of aging Dell PowerEdge servers running Windows Server 2012, direct-attached storage (DAS) arrays, and a legacy tape backup system. The IT team of 5 engineers managed approximately 50 TB of primary data, growing at 2 TB per month. The company was in the process of virtualizing their workloads using VMware vSphere to improve resource utilization and disaster recovery capabilities.

Technical Challenge

The primary challenge was a failing backup window. The legacy tape backup system took over 12 hours to complete nightly backups, often exceeding the 8-hour window and causing backups to spill into business hours. This resulted in a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) of 24 hours and a Recovery Time Objective (RTO) of 48 hours for critical systems. Additionally, the DAS arrays had no redundancy—a single disk failure could bring down an entire application. The company experienced three such failures in the past year, each causing over 6 hours of downtime. The IT team also struggled with capacity planning: the DAS arrays were 85% full, and adding new storage required significant downtime. Furthermore, the lack of centralized management made it difficult to monitor storage health and performance. Implemented Solution

Intilogy designed a tiered storage architecture combining Synology and QNAP NAS devices. For primary virtualization storage, we deployed a QNAP TVS-h1288X with 12 bays, loaded with 10TB Seagate IronWolf Pro HDDs and 2TB Samsung 870 EVO SSDs for caching. This unit was connected to two Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 servers running VMware vSphere 7 via 10GbE SFP+ links, providing high-speed storage for 40 virtual machines. For backup and file sharing, we installed a Synology RackStation RS1221RP+ with 8 bays, configured in RAID 6, and integrated with Veeam Backup & Replication v11. The backup network utilized a dedicated 10GbE switch to isolate backup traffic. We also implemented Synology Active Backup for Business to handle physical server backups. The entire solution was monitored via Synology Central Management System (CMS) and QNAP QTS. The deployment included a disaster recovery site at a secondary location, replicating critical data using Synology Snapshot Replication.

Results & ROI

The new storage infrastructure delivered immediate and measurable improvements. Backup times dropped from 12 hours to 2.5 hours, allowing the backup window to close well before business hours. The RPO was reduced from 24 hours to 1 hour, and RTO improved from 48 hours to 4 hours for critical VMs. Storage capacity increased from 50 TB to 120 TB usable, with room to grow. The company achieved 99.99% storage uptime over the first 6 months, with zero data loss incidents. The IT team reported a 70% reduction in storage management overhead thanks to centralized monitoring and automated snapshot policies. Additionally, the virtualization project enabled a 3:1 consolidation ratio, reducing physical server count from 15 to 5, saving on power and cooling costs.
