The client is a multinational manufacturing company with a production facility in Bekasi, Indonesia. They operate 24/7 with a distributed IT environment comprising over 500 virtual machines across multiple hypervisors, including VMware vSphere. Their primary storage consisted of a mix of direct-attached storage (DAS) and older SAN arrays from a legacy vendor, with a total usable capacity of 120 TB. The company handles sensitive design files, production schedules, and financial data, requiring strict data integrity and high availability.
Prior to the upgrade, the IT team managed backups using a combination of tape drives and a single backup server running a basic file-level backup solution. The backup window was scheduled during off-peak hours but frequently exceeded 12 hours due to storage performance limitations. Recovery tests were rarely performed, and the estimated RTO for critical systems was 48 hours, which was unacceptable for their continuous production operations.

Technical Challenge
The primary technical challenge was the inability to meet the required RPO of 1 hour and RTO of 4 hours for critical applications. The existing storage infrastructure had a single point of failure; a controller failure could bring down all connected VMs. Additionally, the backup system relied on a single 10 GbE network link, causing backup windows to stretch beyond 12 hours, with a 30% failure rate due to network congestion and disk I/O bottlenecks. The company also faced rapid data growth of 20% year-over-year, and the legacy array could not scale without forklift upgrades.
Another critical issue was ransomware protection. The existing backup solution did not support immutable snapshots, leaving the company vulnerable to data encryption attacks. Implemented Solution
Intilogy designed a comprehensive storage upgrade leveraging a hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) approach combined with dedicated all-flash storage. The core storage layer was replaced with two Synology RackStation RS3617RPxs units configured in an active-passive cluster, providing 80 TB of usable all-flash capacity with NVMe caching. For backup and disaster recovery, we deployed Veeam Backup & Replication v12 with a dedicated backup proxy server connected via 25 GbE links to the primary storage. Immutable backups were configured on a separate QNAP TS-1685 NAS with write-once-read-many (WORM) technology.
The solution also integrated with the existing VMware environment using Veeam's vSphere integration for application-aware backups. To ensure business continuity, we implemented a replication schedule with a 15-minute RPO between the two Synology units, and a secondary backup copy was sent to a remote site using hybrid cloud connectivity. The entire migration was performed online with zero downtime using storage vMotion and Veeam's replication technology. Additionally, we deployed a Fortinet FortiGate firewall with advanced threat protection to secure the storage network.
